New Podcast: Episode 23 - Company of Guitar Heroes (MP3 Edition)

Yes, they killed off Guitar Hero, and milked a baker's dozen of franchises until their teats were dry, but is Activision really as 'Evil' as the gaming media makes them out to be? Of course they are, you silly gooses!

This week, the man with the PhD and his sidekick rap about:

TALES OF THE PERSONAL
WillyBeans - Women. Women. Lots of pretty women. DocBrown - Playing your DS in public while trying to convince others you are an adult.

GAME THE MEDIA
Activision: Good? Evil? Who cares?

MAIN TOPIC - Game Collectors Unite!
What is with all you crazies out there that keep buying tons and tons of games to build a backlog you will NEVER, EVER, EVER get through? Even more, with 60 million games on your shelf, why are you forcing yourself to finish games that you hate? Why is DocBrown?

PLAY AS YOU GO
DocBrown - S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Dungeons & Desktops WillyBeans - Ghost Trick, Lost

Actard? Blizz-o-vision? ActaBliz? Satan's-Cult-of-Chaos-and-death-a-blizz? So many wasted opportunities…

New Podcast: Episode 22 - Back to the Flu-ture (MP3 Edition)

This episode is waaay late in being posted.

I got sick. I had the flu. Like bad. Like really bad.

Look, we could spend all day pointing fingers at each other. We could put all of our time and effort in trying to figure out exactly who is to blame for this episode being posted so long after it was so meticulously edited and aged to perfect ripeness in its own private digital locker.

But we're a team here at Gaming The Media. We don't succeed on the strength of one person and we don't fail because of one person. Let’s just agree that we ALL share the blame equally, including you, the listener. If you stop and think about it, perhaps I hold the least amount of blame of us all. I was sick. Awwwwww…

This episode is a look back on 2010 and those events and games we experienced that we didn’t get a chance to wrap an entire episode around. We’ve got discussions, arguments, and emails about the insanity that was the last year. Please. To. Enjoy.

New Podcast: Episode 21 - Resident EMAIL! (MP3 Edition)

Sometimes the best way to know that you love something is to attack it. A lot. That probably doesn't make any sense, but it's the best we have for explaining why 17 minutes in we spend so much time talking about episode 127 of the GamesRadar podcast: TalkRadar. The man with the PhD and his sidekick talk about the problems they have with the arguments made by the site's editors (namely, that it is offensive to question their integrity), and a lot of the problems we see in game reviews as a whole.

First up, however, treat your ears to one of our strangest intros of all time that abruptly ends in a blooper that we could not bring ourselves to correct. In Tales of The Personal, WillyBeans begs the world to stop thanking each other so much, while DocBrown marvels at how different comics were in their Silver Age (get it? MARVELS! Ha!).

The main topic this week is a trip down memory lane for all things Resident Evil. Some good memories, some bad, and all with spectacular voice acting, with many entries providing the hosts with plenty of opportunities to completely disagree on the strengths and weaknesses on some of the titles.

New Podcast: Episode 20 - Dealing with the Fallout (MP3 Edition)

Are Japanese games really all that great anymore? Do the majority of the products coming out of the Far East hold up against their Western counterparts? The man with the PhD and his sidekick team up to discuss exactly why the gaming media seems all too willing to give Japanese games a break when perhaps some harsh reviews could be exactly what they need. Is it just fondness for the past that gets them a pass, or are we the ones that are crazy? Why are we asking so many questions?

For our main topic this week, WillyBeans takes what was originally planned as a discussion on the design direction of open world RPGs into a rant over the insane amount of bugs present in Bethesda’s games, and how more people need to join him in his holy quest to stand up and say no. Basically, you need to know that if you purchased Fallout: New Vegas, you’re part of the problem.

New Podcast: Episode 19 - Airus Salmon (MP3 Edition)

There are five things in this world that we at the Gaming The Media love to podcast about. Four of those things are Metorid, the fifth: Gamecritics.com's Brad Gallaway.

This week the man with the PhD and his sidekick talk about one of the finest game series to ever grace our consoles (uh...Metroid, not Brad Gallaway -- though that would be a sweet, sweet console game). With little time for Tales of the Personal this week, the duo kick-off the episode with the gaming media's growing obsession with all things iPhone/iPod/iPad related. Are these devices REALLY worthy of all the attention that they're getting from the games media?

Then, for our main event, we talk Metroid. From its humble beginnings as a quirky NES game, through the unbelievable innovation of the Prime series, to the questionable (at best) latest entries. Be warned that we are full spoilers on for this one, folks! Well...not for Other M -- WillyBeans quit an hour in and DocBrown has yet to try it. But that just means we get to focus on the love!

New Podcast: Episode 18 - 80081ES (MP3 Edition)

From the very depths of hell comes a man that no deity can possibly strike down. Women and children fear him, animals run at his scent, men tremble at the very mention of his name: Haynes.

Following the most awesomely horrible Tales of the Personal we've ever had, our guest Haynes joins the man with the PhD and his sidekick to discuss exactly what it is that we get out of all the gaming media that we consume. Are most of us just listening to podcasts for websites that we never vist?

Doc and WillyBeans talk about exactly how mature games are these days. The discussion takes us from Japanese VS Western ideas of humour, tired gun-porn fantasies, and the role of women in modern games.

Coming Home...

Those who've listened to the podcast a few times probably know that I like to talk about classic PC games. While I began gaming on the NES in the late 80s, it wasn't very long after that my family picked up a PC. I can still remember its specs: 386 SX 16, 1 MB of RAM, 40 MB HD. Some friends of my dad loaned us a few games, Sierra adventure titles and a little gem known as Sid Meier's Pirates!, and I was hooked.

I don't like to claim that PC games were 'better' than console games back then - we all respect the classic console greats, of course - but it's undeniable that they were different. Chalk it up to hardware specs and/or design philosophy, but there was a certain grandeur to PC titles that was lacking in early consoles. The RPGs were immense and epic, the strategy games timeless, the simulation titles punishingly accurate, and so on. While I love aspects of games on all systems, my decision to leave PC gaming in favor of console exclusivity for the past several years has occasionally left me with pangs of regret.

New Podcast: Episode 17 - l33t Game Paddles (MP3)

Does the gaming media get you? Do your parents?

The man with the PhD and his sidekick decide to tackle one of these pressing issues as they question whether all the free games, press events, and a plethora of online friends has caused the members of the gaming media to become out of touch with their readers.

The duo also discuss the appropriateness of videogames in a job interview, and feast on a main course of videogame controllers of all types.

Well, they don't eat videogame controllers (that would be ridiculous), but they do talk about all the ways the game has been, is, and will be played, from primitive physical controllers to the culmination of 3.5 billion years of evolution.

New Podcast: Episode 16 - Yesterday's Enterprise

Kids these days. They play their fancy little games. What with the Final Fantasy, the Elder Scrolls, Fallout, the Street Fighters...

Enough with your fancy pants crap!

Back in our day we had REAL games. Games like Final Fantasy, the Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Street Fighter!!!

The man with the PhD and his sidekick remember what it was like to game as a kid, and they remember their old dreams of the gaming future. Are games today better than we used to hope for? Worse? Or are games right where we thought they'd be?

The conversation is kicked off with a discussion of whether or not it is important for the gaming media to be familiar with the games of old, and for those people that think it is important, what the hell is a young member of the gaming media supposed to do?
