Episode 23 - Company of Guitar Heroes

Yes, they killed off Guitar Hero, and milked a baker's dozen of franchises until their teats were dry, but is Activision really as 'Evil' as the gaming media makes them out to be? Of course they are, you silly gooses!

This week, the man with the PhD and his sidekick rap about:

TALES OF THE PERSONAL

WillyBeans - Women. Women. Lots of pretty women.

DocBrown - Playing your DS in public while trying to convince others you are an adult.

GAME THE MEDIA
Activision: Good? Evil? Who cares?

MAIN TOPIC - Game Collectors Unite!

What is with all you crazies out there that keep buying tons and tons of games to build a backlog you will NEVER, EVER, EVER get through? Even more, with 60 million games on your shelf, why are you forcing yourself to finish games that you hate? Why is DocBrown?

PLAY AS YOU GO
DocBrown - S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Dungeons & Desktops
WillyBeans - Ghost Trick, Lost

Episode 22 - Back to the Flu-ture

This episode is waaay late in being posted.

I got sick. I had the flu. Like bad. Like really bad.

Look, we could spend all day pointing fingers at each other. We could put all of our time and effort in trying to figure out exactly who is to blame for this episode being posted so long after it was so meticulously edited and aged to perfect ripeness in its own private digital locker.

But we're a team here at Gaming The Media. We don't succeed on the strength of one person and we don't fail because of one person. Let's just agree that we ALL share the blame equally, including you, the listener. If you stop and think about it, perhaps I hold the least amount of blame of us all. I was sick. Awwwwww…

This episode is a look back on 2010 and those events and games we experienced that we didn't get a chance to wrap an entire episode around. We've got discussions, arguments, and emails about the insanity that was the last year. Please. To. Enjoy.

Episode 21 - Resident EMAIL!

Sometimes the best way to know that you love something is to attack it. A lot. That probably doesn't make any sense, but it's the best we have for explaining why 17 minutes in we spend so much time talking about episode 127 of the GamesRadar podcast: TalkRadar.  The man with the PhD and his sidekick talk about the problems they have with the arguments made by the site's editors (namely, that it is offensive to question their integrity), and a lot of the problems we see in game reviews as a whole.

First up, however, treat your ears to one of our strangest intros of all time that abruptly ends in a blooper that we could not bring ourselves to correct. In Tales of The Personal, WillyBeans begs the world to stop thanking each other so much, while DocBrown marvels at how different comics were in their Silver Age (get it? MARVELS! Ha!).

The main topic this week is a trip down memory lane for all things Resident Evil. Some good memories, some bad, and all with spectacular voice acting, with many entries providing the hosts with plenty of opportunities to completely disagree on the strengths and weaknesses on some of the titles.

Finally, in Play As You Go, Willy Beans talks about finishing the Professor Layton trilogy while DocBrown gives his thoughts on Metrod: Other M.

Episode 20 - Dealing with the Fallout

Are Japanese games really all that great anymore? Do the majority of the products coming out of the Far East hold up against their Western counterparts? The man with the PhD and his sidekick team up to discuss exactly why the gaming media seems all too willing to give Japanese games a break when perhaps some harsh reviews could be exactly what they need. Is it just fondness for the past that gets them a pass, or are we the ones that are crazy? Why are we asking so many questions?

For our main topic this week, WillyBeans takes what was originally planned as a discussion on the design direction of open world RPGs into a rant over the insane amount of bugs present in Bethesda's games, and how more people need to join him in his holy quest to stand up and say no. Basically, you need to know that if you purchased Fallout: New Vegas, you're part of the problem.

We have listener feedback, some Tales of the Personal, and our thoughts on the games we're currently playing: Professor Layton and Dawn of War II.

If you work at Bethesda or Obsidian stop reading this and go make me some patches!!!! (and a sandwich)

Episode 19 - Airus Salmon

There are five things in this world that we at the Gaming The Media love to podcast about. Four of those things are Metorid, the fifth: Gamecritics.com's Brad Gallaway.

This week the man with the PhD and his sidekick talk about one of the finest game series to ever grace our consoles (uh...Metroid, not Brad Gallaway -- though that would be a sweet, sweet console game). With little time for Tales of the Personal this week, the duo kick-off the episode with the gaming media's growing obsession with all things iPhone/iPod/iPad related. Are these devices REALLY worthy of all the attention that they're getting from the games media?

Then, for our main event, we talk Metroid. From its humble beginnings as a quirky NES game, through the unbelievable innovation of the Prime series, to the questionable (at best) latest entries. Be warned that we are full spoilers on for this one, folks! Well...not for Other M -- WillyBeans quit an hour in and DocBrown has yet to try it. But that just means we get to focus on the love!

In Play as You Go, WillyBeans talks about going back to play Super Metroid again for the first time in 13 years and DocBrown still tries to convince all of us that PCs can actually run games with his discussion of Mass Effect 2 and its DLC, and The Witcher.

Episode 18 - 80081ES

From the very depths of hell comes a man that no deity can possibly strike down. Women and children fear him, animals run at his scent, men tremble at the very mention of his name: Haynes.

Following the most awesomely horrible Tales of the Personal we've ever had, our guest Haynes joins the man with the PhD and his sidekick to discuss exactly what it is that we get out of all the gaming media that we consume. Are most of us just listening to podcasts for websites that we never vist?

Doc and WillyBeans talk about exactly how mature games are these days. The discussion takes us from Japanese VS Western ideas of humour, tired gun-porn fantasies, and the role of women in modern games.

We wrap it all up with a final discussion on Scott Pilgrim, Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines, and trying to meet women on dating sites.

Episode 17 - l33t Game Paddles

Does the gaming media get you? Do your parents?

The man with the PhD and his sidekick decide to tackle one of these pressing issues as they question whether all the free games, press events, and a plethora of online friends has caused the members of the gaming media to become out of touch with their readers.

The duo also discuss the appropriateness of videogames in a job interview, and feast on a main course of videogame controllers of all types.

Well, they don't eat videogame controllers (that would be ridiculous), but they do talk about all the ways the game has been, is, and will be played, from primitive physical controllers to the culmination of 3.5 billion years of evolution.

The episode wraps with DocBrown's thoughts on Ys Seven, and WillyBeans explains why it's a good idea to go back to Dragon Age once more.

Episode 16 - Yesterday's Enterprise

Kids these days. They play their fancy little games. What with the Final Fantasy, the Elder Scrolls, Fallout, the Street Fighters...

Enough with your fancy pants crap!

Back in our day we had REAL games. Games like Final Fantasy, the Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Street Fighter!!!

The man with the PhD and his sidekick remember what it was like to game as a kid, and they remember their old dreams of the gaming future. Are games today better than we used to hope for? Worse? Or are games right where we thought they'd be?

The conversation is kicked off with a discussion of whether or not it is important for the gaming media to be familiar with the games of old, and for those people that think it is important, what the hell is a young member of the gaming media supposed to do?

Tales of the Personal this week sees WillyBeans explaining what it's like to live Mega Man 9, while DocBrown explains the rather surprising attitude his parents hold about videogames.

Finally, we wrap with a discussion of Bayonetta and an admittance that while WillyBeans is thrilled with his introduction to the Scott Pilgrim comic he has absolutely no idea HOW to read a comic.

Episode 15 - 3.5 Billion Years

Question: How many Japanese produced games are you super-excited about being released this year?

Wow. That's way more than us.

So what the hell happened? How and when did we go from Japan absolutely dominating the worldwide videogames market to where we are today? The man with the PhD and his sidekick discuss East VS West in all things videogames -- where it's been, where it is, and where it's going. If turning 30 sounds like something that'll never happen to you, then you'll learn a lot about the tragedy of how Japanese games used to be the ultimate in awesome.

In Tales of The Personal, DocBrown takes us deeper into the rabbit hole with another classic tale of a man known only as a Geoff with 'J', while WillyBeans brings hard science to the show to break down the top 5 things brought to us by evolution.

An off-hand comment from Joystiq's Justin McElroy provides us with an epic discussion on whether or not it makes sense to publically critique free game sites, and we wrap it all up with final thoughts on Mass Effect 2, Dragon Quest V, and Tom Bissell's book 'Extra Lives'.

Episode 14 - Chrono Sticklers

We. Are. Back.

Finally!

With WillyBeans having completed his month long move to a new home, the man with the PhD and his sidekick make their return to the world of podcasting to take on an email sent in by listener Rico, where he asks if we have been unfair in our hatred of Chrono Cross. And because we love Rico more than life itself, we devote our main topic this episode to hashing out the ups and downs of Chronos Trigger and Cross.

In Tales of The Personal, WillyBeans finds the solution to the homeless problem, and DocBrown talks about how he was pantomime assaulted for owning a Playstation 3.

Finally, we react to Weekend Confirmed's Brian Leahy as he dismisses listener issues with receiving a free 360 slim from Microsoft, and WillyBeans and DocBrown run through their impressions of Mass Effect, No More Heroes 2, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

OMG did u see those l33t haxors that Micro$oft did to the PSsux at e3 becuz i thougt that nitendumb wuld be dumb but then every 1 else was dumer it was so amazing hahahaah rofflcopters! FTW!

Fanboys. What exactly makes them cuco for Coco Puffs? The man with the PhD and his sidekick try to figure it all out. The discussion not only takes us to fanboy hate territory, but also to trying to understand where these people are coming from. At one point, WillyBeans actually defends them. Clearly, he is biased. We talk 'Lost' love (but not about lost love), the biggest gaming franchises, the big three systems, the internet's impact on fanboyism, and the goods and evils of fanboys in the gaming media.

And if that weren't enough, WillyBeans shows what a fanboy he is for gamecritics.com when he busts out some HARD SCIENCE to give us the 'Top 5 members of the gamecritics.com podcast with the name Brad Gallaway'.

Episode 12 - A Rainbow in the Dark

Google 'Dio', it'll all make sense.

Then (and only then) come back and listen to WillyBeans' Tale of the Personal in which he relates what it was like to be a gay man. Truly, this will be a changing day in your life.

For our main topic, starting with 'The Uninvited' for the NES and taking it all the way to 'Dead Space' on the current-gen consoles, the man with the PhD and his sidekick discuss the horror genre -- what's good, what's bad, and why it may never be as great as it once could have been. WillyBeans, in particular, takes the discussion to some rather dark places in conjuring up his dream horror game, so be sure and brace yourselves for some truly horrific, and uncomfortable videogame ideas.

The discussion then takes us into the realm of Kotaku Talk Radio and fan interaction with the greatest of game designers, and in Mortal Emails we discuss those times when we've been burnt out on the gaming media, and Australia's ratings system.

Finally, we wrap it up with more thoughts on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.

Episode 11 - STUPID GAME IS CHEATING!!11

Ah...the cry of a generation. How many tears, how many broken controls have the years seen? But is it difficulty or just bad game design?

This episode the PhD and his sidekick discuss difficulty in videogames, tackling the topic from a million different angles. From the apparent unfairness of the early Sierra Adventure games to the Legendary difficulty option in your favorite first person shooters, we look at it all.

We follow it up with an in-depth discussion on the goods and evils of review scores, talking about the 7-10 scale, metacritic, where videogame critics get things right with scores, and where they need to get their act together.

And we finish it all up with some Mortal Emails and our first entry in playing through Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.

Episode 10 - When Doves Cry

As episode 10 of Gaming The Media opens with its first ever musical intro, and you hear DocBrown sing, you will know what it is…to hear…doves cry.

Really, the shownotes this week were the easiest part of making our first musical episode.  Though we critique ourselves, and talk in-depth about WillyBeans's love VS DocBrown's hate of Final Fantasy XIII, this episode is all about some of our favorite videogame music of all time. We try to keep it fresh by not focusing on obvious examples; though only you can be the judge of how right or wrong we are.

Music includes:

Chrono Cross - Radical Dreamers ~Unstolen Jewel~
The Legend of Zelda - Intro
Megaman II - Air Man Stage
Time Lord - Main Theme
StarTropics - Cave
Starglider 2
Dragon Warrior II - Endless World

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - Credits
ActRaiser - Filmore - Stage 1
Soul Blazer - Dungeon Theme
Secret of Mana - Fear of the Heavens ~ Title Theme

Streets of Rage 2 - Go Straight (Stage 1-1)
Donkey Kong Country - Gangplank Galleon
WarCraft II - Human Music II
Final Fantasy VII - Listen to the Cries of the Planet

Persona 3 - Battle Theme
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix - Clamato Fever (Menu)
Tears For Fears - Shout
Final Fantasy XIII - Eternal Love (Japanese)

You know, putting no effort into the shownotes this week is really just to piss off the ol' Doc and the incredible amount of work he put into editing this one. Bam. I'm out.

Episode 9 - Meryl? Liquid!? Grey Fox! Otacon...

Metal Gear!? So it goes like this: Nothingness, a big-bang, some wars and stuff, and then the birth of Hideo Kojima. Bam. The history of the world in one paragraph.

We realize that after a decade of post-mortems, blogs, reviews, feature articles, and other podcasts, you probably know Metal Gear better than Konami at this point. The last thing you want to hear is a detailed account of the series, and so we spend our time this episode simply focusing on what Metal Gear has meant to the both of us while re-living some of its greatest music moments.

Before that, each host tells a heart-warming story to restore your faith in humanity, and in Mortal Emails we answer questions about Strategy RPGs and Microsoft's XNA program.

For our main event, the hosts prove that Jim Sterling is no demon, for if he was, we'd have summoned him by now simply by saying his name sixty times as we react to his reaction of our overly long critique of Destructoid's Podtoid in our last episode. Jim Sterling, Jim Sterling, Jim Sterling...(nope, still safe)

Finally, we've got a contest to win a free copy of Daikatana simply be emailing us at podcast@gamingthemedia.com with some criticism in preparation for when we review ourselves next episode, and as we talk about Uncharted Waters in the last segment of this episode, you probably won't be stuck for a contest entry. Even we don't understand what was going on...

WillyBeans is especially proud of the fact that he uttered the phrase "I'm not talking about videogame writing. I'm talking about real writing..." Fucking brilliant...

Episode 8 - Stay A While And Listen

How do two grown men bring up the topic of story in videogames without it ballooning
out to a 3 and a half hour episode? You've got us stumped!

Pull up a chair and listen as a PhD and his sidekick tackle what's right and what's wrong about videogame stories from every possible angle imaginable whilst constantly bringing up Final Fantasy XIII (spoiler free!).

DocBrown kicks things off by opening the floodgates of crazy with a story of his old DND campaign with a DM who shall heretofor be known for the sake of privacy as Geoff with a 'J'. WillyBeans wants to know why so many people are playing FFXIII if they hate it so much, and why no one seems to want to play GTA IV if they love it so much.

Game Stories and Topics this episode include:

- Is the Bitmob's Jason Wilson crazy?
- Plot vs narrative
- Story vs 'feel'
- Do/did hardware limitations make for good stories?
- Garnett Lee's need for a pre-defined character with a backstory
- Dungeon Master
- Morrowind
- Oblivion
- Fallout 3
- Heavy Rain
- Yakuza
- Soul Reaver
- God of War
- Final Fantasy IX

- Betrayal at Krondor

- Return to Krondor
- Mass Effect
- Dragon Age
- Baldur's Gate II
- Planescape: Torment
- Bioshock
- And, somehow, still more

And finally the guys tackle Podtoid with particular emphasis on Samit Sarkar, before finishing up their discussion of their playthrough of Mother 3.

You know, it's possible we may be long-winded...

Episode 7 - Still Half-Alive

Rise and shine, Mr. Listener. Rise. And. Shine. (Not that we wish to imply you have been sleeping on. The job.)

That's right folks, you guessed it! It's time to talk about STAR CONTROL II !!!!

But first, it's time for Half-Life talking (with some spoilers for HL1 and 2). The guys are joined by Marty McFly (who insists on calling himself Haynes) to talk about the entirety of the Half-Life series, from its humble beginnings as a PhD from MIT red button pushing simulator, to the legendary game phenomenon that it is today. But does it deserve all that praise? Does it? Really? Only listening will tell...

Once the dust settles, the trio try to talk really fast about why Zero Punction is getting old for some of us really quick, leaving just enough time to squeeze in a quick 35 minute discussion on Star Control II, and then it's back to the hibernation chamber for another week!

Unfortunately the first segment in which WillyBeans talks about smearing his makeup with human tears (no, seriously) is haunted by the age-old audio demons. But once the guys start talking about their experiences with dating girl gamers, it's smooth sailing with DocBrown, WillyBeans, and Haynes.

Just you wait until we get our Haynes on you.

Episode 6 - Only a Mother Could Love...

And now it's time for a guy with a PhD and his sidekick to talk about a little known game released in Japan called Mother 3. Perhaps you've heard it?  We begin our playthrough of the game using the translation patch from http://starmen.net/ and boy is there a lot to say.

Before that, though, WillyBeans talks about his bad (and good) experiences meeting Jeff Martin of The Tea Party, Wil Wheaton, William Shatner, the WWF/E's Kurgan, and his not-so-secret relationship with EA's Jeff Green. Docbrown bitches about trying to be a game-collector as a Gamestop customer, and then it's time for Mortal Emails wherein we focus our discussion on Achievements/Trophies.

The guys then try to understand the love that gamers and the gaming media alike shower on games that really don't seem to deserve it, seemingly oblivious to the fact that this is going to make people angry. The guys don't agree on all entries, but they certainly seem to want the hate mail. Highlights include:

- The Halo series
- The Madden series
- The Phoenix Wright series
- Super Mario Bros. 3
- World of Warcraft (and many other MMOs)
- Final Fantasy XIII

Perhaps afraid that they haven't done enough yet this episode to generate hate mail, the guys take on the 'lack of innovation' in games media with the discussion including: Podtoid, Kotaku, Joystiq, TalkRadar, GiantBomb, 1UP Yours, Trigames.NET, 1UP's The Oddcast, 1UP's Retronauts, GFW radio, and 1UP's Active Time Babble.

Plus, is Jeremy Parish as terrible as he wants us all to believe? Listen Now!

Episode 5 - Final Fidelity VII

IT'S FINAL FANTASY TALKING TIME!!!!

With all of the excitement you'd find in the intro of any Final Fantasy title, the best episode of Gaming The Media yet starts out with a bang! DocBrown regales us all with an absolutely beautiful reading of the fanfiction classic Glory and Honor, where Cloud Strife, Solid Snake, and Sunny Gurlukovich find happiness in each others' arms. Underneath a bridge. In Germany. (You really, REALLY won't believe this until you hear it for yourself).

Channeling all the magic of any good Final Fantasy plot twist, WillyBeans confesses to his own 2005 fan fiction website written and dedicated to the Gamespot classic TimeTrotters, complete with clips of ex-Gamespot editor Rich Gallup making fun of him, and an important email from GiantBomb's Ryan Davis on WillyBean's story.

As epic as any Final Fantasy game, this episode balloons out to an unprecedented 3.5 hours! Completely Final Fantasy XIII spoiler free, cut with great Final Fantasy music, and full of equal parts love and not-so-much love, the gents discuss:

(Time-stamped if you want to avoid spoilers for any entry)

- Final Fantasy I  (00:35:30 – 00:46:08)
- Final Fantasy IV (Japan) / Final Fantasy II (US)  (00: 46:49 -  00:59:50)
        & (1:11:00 – 1:12:40)
- Final Fantasy VI (Japan) / Final Fantasy III (US) (1:00:00 – 1:20:00)
- Final Fantasy VII (1:21:09 – 1:54:40)
- Final Fantasy VIII (1:56:44 – 1:59:50)
- Final Fantasy IX (1:59:51 – 2:08:38)
- Final Fantasy X (2:08:39 – 2:16:12)
- Final Fantasy XI (2:16:13 – 2:20:15)
- Final Fantasy XII (2:20:16 – 2:30:52)
- Final Fantasy talk continues, but completely spoiler free

We follow it all up with a discussion of how the gaming media over-hypes EVERYTHING, and then makes fun of us gamers for buying into the hype. And finally, we talk about our playthrough of Roberta William's Phantasmagoria.

And best of all, like the end of any good final fantasy game, the end of these shownotes make no sense. DocBrown saves WillyBeans until gets a tied lost or the meadow flowers show him the way to a true power: Heart.
